This abridged adaptation of one of the greatest novels in English literature is read by Freda Dowie with Ken Drury. First published in 1847, under her pseudonym Ellis Bell, Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontës only finished novel and was initially deemed controversial because of its dark depiction of mental and physical cruelty, and it also challenged Victorian ideas about religion, morality, class and a womans place in society. It follows the life of Heathcliff, a mysterious gypsy-like urchin, brought to The Heights by Mr Earnshaw following a trip to Liverpool, and the passionate relationship that develops with Cathy Earnshaw. It is a story of love, hate, pity and retribution, the effects of which reverberate throughout the succeeding generations.
