Fronted by Tony Williams’ distinctive tenor, the heavenly harmonies of The Platters are intrinsically linked with the rock ‘n’ roll movement of the 1950s. Monumental tracks such as “Only You (And You Alone)”, “The Great Pretender”, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, and “My Prayer” would prove successful on both sides of the Atlantic and their music would be universally appreciated by generations through landmark movies such as “Rock Around The Clock”, “The Girl Can’t Help It”, and “American Graffiti”. The Platters were an incredibly talented collective that bridged the gap between doowop and the early rock ‘n’ roll explosion. They racked up more than 40 chart hits in the US between 1955 and 1967, leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape. Their distinctive sound, primarily based on the tenor lead vocal styling of frontman Williams, made them the most successful black group of their era. This collection celebrates their legacy with 16 of their greatest and most fondly remembered releases during the extraordinary first decade of their career. Their remarkable records have stood the test of time as pop and R&B classics, leaving a lasting impression in the hearts of music lovers of all ages.
