Slim Gaillard - Scat, Swing & Surrealism feat. Slim & Slam 1938-52 (LP)

Singer, dancer, and visionary jazz pioneer Slim Gaillard was an absolute anomaly in American music. While respected by elite modern jazz players for his Charlie Christian-style guitar technique and heavy boogie piano, Gaillard chose a path of pure musical Dadaism. Armed with his invented, food-obsessed jive dialect "Vout," he transformed standard swing into surrealist art.

Scat, Swing & Surrealism feat. Slim & Slam 1938-52 captures the prime creative era of hip-hop’s linguistic ancestor. Side A features his breakthrough New York recordings with bassist Slam Stewart, anchored by the iconic, chart-topping global phenomenon "Flat Foot Floogie". Side B chronicles his post-war West Coast explosion, where he operated with absolute studio freedom.

From the mechanical, rhythmic drive of the massive hit "Cement Mixer" to the late-night, deep-grooving junk food celebration of "Potato Chips" alongside tenor saxophone giant Ben Webster, this collection highlights Gaillard’s unmatched showmanship.

Including the historic, once-banned bebop track "Yep-Roc-Heresy" featuring Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, this 16-track release belongs in the collection of every serious jazz enthusiast and lover of mid-century pop culture.
