Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock’s first real horror film, received mixed reviews initially, but has become a cult classic. Nominated for many awards, it is considered one of Hitchcock’s best films and is often ranked amongst the greatest films of all time. Would the film have reached such heights without one of the greatest film composers of all time, Bernard Herrmann? Herrmann “had taken the picture and turned it into an opera” – Joseph Stefano. Due to the tight budget of the film, Herrmann had to compose for just strings, which creates a unique atmosphere throughout the film. This vinyl presents the complete music for the film from the strings of the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernard Herrmann himself, at Barking Assembly Hall, London in 1975. This recording is different to the recording of the music from the film, and showcases Herrmann’s music in full force with many more players, as he originally intended it to sound. The recording brilliantly presents the different techniques that Herrmann used in different scenes to create such a unique and memorable atmosphere. It is important to distinguish between what a composer writes for a film, and how it is actually used in the film itself, and this recording presents Herrmann’s score in its full glory.
