Savoy Brown founder, Kim Simmonds, shows off his lighter side of acoustic guitar playing, singing and song writing on Out Of The Blue.
Considered one of the architects of British blues, Simmonds started the Savoy Brown Blues Band in 1965 in London. Signing with Decca, Savoy Brown’s classic line-up was completed by rhythm guitarist Lonesome Dave Peverett, and vocalist Chris Youlden, in 1969.
Known for his fiery and heavy blues rock guitar playing and singing, he and Savoy Brown moved operations to the USA in 1980. Simmonds still tours extensively with Savoy Brown and records albums. In 2017, his album with Savoy Brown, Witchy Feeling, reached No.1 on the Billboard blues charts. Out Of The Blue, lifted from a 2008 studio session recording, highlights Simmonds’ skill and dexterity in a stripped down guitar/vocal setting. This is the fourth of five solo blues-based Kim Simmonds has released during a fruitful period, the others being: Solitaire (1997), Blues Like Midnight (2000), Struck By Lightning (2006), and Jazzin’ On The Blues (2015).
Simmonds, talking to Rock & Blues Muse, said: “I grew up with the American music of the late ‘50s, early ‘60s, Chess Records, Muddy Waters, B.B. King… I keep going back to those people.”
The 11 tracks here reflect his lifelong love for rootsy Chicago Blues and, while covering plenty musical territory, these self-composed numbers have an intimacy that only acoustic music can capture.
A variety of guitar sounds and approaches make this an enjoyable musical treat and the cover, painted by Simmonds, adds another special touch.
Out Of The Blue was recorded in Simmonds’ own White Cottage Studios and each song reflects a truly personal side. A wonderful treat for fans of Simmonds, Savoy Brown and acoustic blues lovers around the world.
