Jesse Green’s second album for Chiaroscuro captures his performances during the 11th annual Floating Jazz Festival aboard the S/S Norway in the Caribbean. Drawing inspiration from—but never copying—Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea, Green demonstrates impressive technique, effortless swing, and creative bebop ideas. His trio with bassist Michael Moore and drummer Jackie Williams is featured on two tracks (“Softly” and “I Love You”) before welcoming three guest artists. Highlights include Green’s interplay with guitarist Gene Bertoncini on “All The Things You Are” and a thoughtful duet with vibraphonist and former Berklee instructor Gary Burton on “Sea Journey,” while guitarist Joe Cohn is in top form throughout. The set concludes with a 3½-minute “Jazzspeak,” where Green shares his aspirations, accompanied by engaging liner notes presented as a conversation between Burton and Jesse’s father, trombonist Urbie Green. A compelling introduction to a talented young pianist.
