J. B. Lenoir was a blues singer, guitarist and songwriter, born in Mississippi in 1929, and who learnt his trade in the south alongside Sonny Boy Williamson and Elmore James before moving to Chicago in 1949 and becoming associated with the Chicago style of blues – he died tragically after a car crash in 1968. 

Working initially with Big Bill Broonzy, Big Maceo Merriweather, Memphis Minnie and Muddy Waters, he became a significant figure among the Chicago blues community, despite having only one hit during his career. He was a noted showman, famous for his Zebra-patterned suits, and was well-known for his songs of social commentary like “Eisenhower Blues”. 

This 54-track 2-CD collection comprises releases and recordings for the J.O.B., Chess, Parrot, Checker, Shad and VeeJay labels during this era.  It includes his US R&B No. 11 hit “Mamma Talk To Your Daughter”. It also features other popular releases like “Let’s Roll”, “ Don’t Dog Your Woman” and “Don’t Touch My Head”.

It’ features performances with Sunnyland Slim, Snooky Pryor, Willie Dixon, Leroy Foster, Alfred Wallace, Joe Montgomery, Ernest Cotton, Robert Lockwood Jr. and other top Chicago musicians of the era, and it’s a fine showcase for his music during  primary era of his career.
