Recognised as Mali’s foremost kamale n’goni player, Harouna Samake's debut solo album, Kamale Blues, was released in October 2018.

Samake started to play the six-stringed kamale n’goni or “young man’s harp”, at the tender age of eight after seeing a performance in his childhood village of Dissan.

He has gone on to master the instrument, performing on five Salif Keita albums and alongside artists such as Blick Bassy, Djessou Mory Kanté, Etienne Mbappé and Bassekou Kouyate.

Samake’s style and abilities has also impressed many internationally acclaimed musicians including Mike Stern, Bella Flick and Bonnie Raitt. He met Raitt at the Festival au Désert where the pair jammed one evening and an enduring friendship developed.

On Kamale Blues, Samake employs his talents to reflect upon issues present in the world around him. His lyrics are the foundation for this conceptual approach, referencing immigration, human rights, wealth and inequality.

Sung mostly in his native Bambara with some English and French phrasing, Samake’s album mixes various genres.

Recorded in his native Mali, the stage is now set for Harouna Samake to share his uplifting “Jazzy Mandingo Blues” around the globe.
