This now largely overlooked studio session finds Gerry Mulligan, some 25 years after first achieving fame with his groundbreaking quartet, revisiting the studio to perform six of his then-recent compositions, along with a distinctive reading of “Waltzing Matilda.” Joined by vibraphonist Dave Samuels and a four-piece rhythm section, Mulligan delivers engaging performances of pieces such as “Walk on the Water,” “Idol Gossip,” and “Strayhorn 2,” the latter a reworking of his earlier “Song for Strayhorn.” Still very much in prime form, Jeru also adds touches of soprano saxophone alongside his unmistakable baritone on this date.
