However, when confronted with three suitors, among them the dashing Sergeant Troy, she shows a reckless capriciousness which threatens the stability of the whole community.

Published in 1874, and an immediate best-seller, Far From The Madding Crowd was Thomas Hardys first major literary success and helped establish him as one of Britains foremost writers. He would enjoy further success with The Mayor Of Casterbridge (1886), Tess Of The dUrbervilles (1891), and Jude The Obscure (1895).

This abridged version of his fourth novel is read by Neville Jason.
