The People Said Burn! – California Jam ’74 (CDAA075) captures Deep Purple at one of the most explosive moments of their career, performing before an audience of more than 200,000 at the legendary California Jam festival in April 1974. Riding high on the success of Burn, the first album to feature the Mark III line-up of Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice, the band delivered a powerhouse set that showcased both their formidable musicianship and their reputation as one of the most exciting live acts of the era. The performance featured electrifying renditions of classics including Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin’, Might Just Take Your Life, and the title track Burn, blending hard rock intensity with virtuosic improvisation and dynamic interplay. Famously concluding with Blackmore’s destruction of his guitar and amplifiers amid a dramatic pyrotechnic display, the concert became one of the defining spectacles of 1970s rock. This recording preserves the energy, power, and theatrical flair of a landmark performance, capturing Deep Purple at the peak of their live prowess.
