Casey Bill Weldon was one of the foremost lap steel guitar players of the pre-war blues years, as well as an excellent singer and tunesmith.
Not to be confused with Will Weldon (c. 1904–1934), practically all of the biographical data known about Casey Bill Weldon comes from a 2013 article by Jim O’Neal in Living Blues magazine (issue 228).
In all probability, his real name was Nathan Hammond and he was born on 2 February 1901, in Chanute, Kansas. He adopted the name William Weldon at some point prior to his first appearances as a musician during recording sessions in 1935.
He made his first recordings as Kansas City Bill Weldon or Casey Bill (some subtitled “Hawaiian Guitar Wizard”) on the Bluebird and Vocalion labels.
He was also an active session guitarist, playing on records by Teddy Darby, Bumble Bee Slim, Peetie Wheatstraw and Memphis Minnie - to whom he was married during the 1920s.
