Instinct (DR019) marks a triumphant return for Hammond B-3 master Caesar Frazier, a revered figure in soul jazz whose distinctive sound helped define the genre’s golden era. Joined by an exceptional ensemble featuring guitarist Jacques Lesure, saxophonist Lyle Link, and drummer Leon Joyce Jr., Frazier delivers a programme that seamlessly blends beloved jazz standards with inspired reinterpretations of contemporary classics. From the timeless swing of “Red Top” and “A Night in Tunisia” to soulful readings of Prince’s “Thieves in the Temple” and Norah Jones’s “Don’t Know Why,” the album showcases both the warmth of Frazier’s organ artistry and the remarkable versatility of his collaborators. Rooted in tradition yet refreshingly contemporary, Instinct captures the spontaneity, groove, and emotional depth that have long been hallmarks of great soul jazz, reaffirming Frazier’s place as one of the Hammond organ’s most compelling voices.
