In his teens, Texas-born Buddy Knox and some high-school friends formed a band called the Rhythm Orchids. When they were performing on the same radio show as Roy Orbison, The Big O suggested that Knox go to Norman Petty’s studio in Clovis, New Mexico, to make a record – the same studio where the early Buddy Holly & The Crickets’ hits were made.
His song Party Doll came out on the local Triple-D label and eventually found its way to Roulette Records, who took it over. On its release it climbed to No.1 in the US and No.29 UK. Over the next couple of years he had several more hits and this 44-track set features the A- and B-sides of his singles on the Roulette and Liberty labels from this era. It also includes the tracks not otherwise featured on singles from the Roulette albums Buddy Knox and Buddy Knox & Jimmy Bowen, and the Liberty album Golden Hits. Party Doll, which also featured on the soundtrack to George Lucas’ classic 1973 film American Graffiti, was voted one of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
Aside from Party Doll, Knox also scored success with Hula Love. Adapted from the song My Hula Hula Love, written by Edward Madden and Percy Wenrich, Knox’s version reached No.9 in the US chart in 1957 and was covered by Peter Krauss, Hank Snow, Mud and Pearl Harbour.
For his pioneering contribution, Knox was elected to the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. This collection is a comprehensive an overview of this primary era of his career as a chart artist as can be achieved, and best-known as he is for producing one of the iconic teen hits of the early rock ‘n’ roll years, this gives an insight into the broader spectrum of his music.
