Describing Wiens, Midwest Record’s Chris Spector, said: “[here is] a drummer that’s a firm believer in not beating everything to death.” “His long over due debut,” Spector continues, “has an after hours feel that’s designed not to keep the babysitter out too late, he leads his crew through some righteously swinging stuff that’s on the money throughout. “Tasty licks aplenty fly through the air here and a good time is had by all.” It is a sentiment echoed by All About Jazz reviewer Jack Bowers, who says: “If drums could talk, Bobby Wiens’ kit would no doubt have some nice things to say about how he enlivened and supported his teammates on this tasteful quintet date that was recorded in July 2020, with masks and social distancing, at the UNC Studios in Greeley, CO.” Talking Drums, arose from a Master’s recital at UNC that was cancelled owing to the coronavirus pandemic. “Seizing a chance to make lemonade from that lemon,” Bowers continues, “Wiens and his schoolmates ‘masked up’ and headed to the university’s studio to record together before going their separate ways. “The Master’s programme’s loss is everyone’s gain, especially those who may chance upon this splendid album.” Featuring Austin Cebulske (tenor sax), Jack Roben (guitar), Spencer Zweifel (piano) and David Baker (bass), Wiens has created an ensemble steeped in pure swing and dynamic group interplay. While exploring the sonic and textural boundaries of the classic jazz quintet, the collective have discovered a winning formula. As is the case with many great artists, you can sense the marriage between tradition and innovation are inextricably linked, as the works presented here display.
