With Unstandards, pianist and composer Alessandro Galati presents a collection of original works that possess the timeless elegance, melodic strength and structural balance of classic jazz standards while remaining entirely his own. Supported by an inspired ensemble featuring Simone Santini on oboe and saxophone, Jacob Young on guitar, Ares Tavolazzi on bass and Paolo Vinaccia on drums, Galati creates a distinctive sound world where lyricism, atmosphere and subtle interplay take precedence over virtuosity for its own sake. The unusual combination of instruments, particularly the warm, expressive voice of the oboe, lends the music a chamber-like quality, while Galati’s refined compositions unfold with grace, imagination and emotional depth. From the reflective beauty of May and Into the Wind to the freer textures of 4 Or Net, Unstandards reveals a composer with a singular voice, blending European sensibility, jazz improvisation and a profound commitment to melody into a work of quiet sophistication and enduring appeal.
