Jason Salad (VVJ014) presents pianist and composer Alessandro Galati in one of his most compelling mid-career statements, recorded with an exceptional international quartet featuring Bob Sheppard on saxophone, John Patitucci on bass, and Peter Erskine on drums. Originally recorded in the mid-1990s and later issued on Via Veneto Jazz, the album captures a distinctive moment in Galati’s artistic development, where lyrical refinement and modern post-bop language converge with remarkable clarity and poise. Across a series of original compositions, the quartet navigates fluid interplay, subtle harmonic colour, and a relaxed but deeply focused sense of swing, with each musician contributing both individuality and cohesion to the group sound. Galati’s writing favours melodic elegance and spacious forms, allowing the ensemble to explore nuance and dynamic shading rather than overt display. Jason Salad stands as an enduring example of European jazz dialogue with the American tradition, distinguished by its sophistication, restraint, and understated emotional depth.
