Veteran trombonist Al Grey leads an unusual and engaging quintet on this 1988 recording. Along with drummer Bobby Durham, the group features the sons of several jazz greats: guitarist Joe Cohn (son of Al Cohn), bassist J.J. Wiggins (son of Gerald Wiggins), and Grey’s own son, Mike Grey, on second trombone. The two trombonists share a closely related sound, with the elder Grey taking the majority of the solo spotlight. The repertoire blends familiar swing standards with less-heard compositions by Thad Jones, Sonny Stitt, Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, and Al Grey himself. The music unfolds in a relaxed, straight-ahead fashion, flowing easily from track to track, and giving each of the musicians—aside from Durham—ample opportunity to shine. A rewarding session that is well worth seeking out.
