Billy the Kid / Symphony No. 3 (EVERCD002) brings together two landmark works by Aaron Copland in performances by the Everest Symphony Orchestra under the direction of William Strickland. Billy the Kid, Copland’s evocative ballet score, vividly conjures the mythology of the American West through its open harmonies, folk-inflected melodies, and striking orchestral colour, painting scenes of frontier life with both cinematic immediacy and symphonic craft. In contrast, Symphony No. 3 stands as one of Copland’s most ambitious statements, fusing expansive lyricism, rhythmic vitality, and the iconic incorporation of his Fanfare for the Common Man into a four-movement structure of compelling architectural clarity. Together, these works trace Copland’s ability to shape a distinctly American orchestral voice—at once spacious, energetic, and deeply expressive. This recording captures both the narrative vividness of the ballet and the monumental scope of the symphony, highlighting Copland’s enduring place in twentieth-century music.
